Pregnancy Massage - What are the benefits and is it safe?

As with any alternative therapy, you should consult your physician before you begin pregnancy massage, and you should be sure your practitioner has been properly trained and has experience with pregnant women.

When most start prenatal massages

As in the case with prenatal massage, some therapists prefer to wait until you are beyond your 1st trimester before they will treat you. Be sure to speak with your practitioner prior to any treatment. A good masseuse will not work on you unless they're sure they won't inflict harm on you or your baby.

The benefit of pregnancy massage treatment

The underlying theory of a reflexology pregnancy massage is that targeting specific energy points, primarily in the feet and hands, can simulate organ function and boost your body’s energy flow. The pressure that is impressed allows blocked energy to flow freely, which increases blood flow to the intended part of your body.

Areas targeted during the massage

Reflexologists often focus on the area between your ankle and heel to stimulate labor and contractions. Unless prepared and ready to head for the hospital, make sure that your practitioner or any massage therapist, avoids stimulating this area for any prolonged length of time.

Relief gained from the treatment

Reflexology massage is often used to soothe the aches and pains in your back and joints. As these areas are taking a beating from your growing belly, this treatment can provide relief from your most persistent woes. Some of which include: morning sickness, heartburn, swelling in your legs (excluding preeclampsia), constipation, high blood pressure (again, without the other symptoms of preeclampsia), insomnia, bladder issues, mild cramping and even hemorrhoids.

In addition, reflexology seems to reduce emotional stresses, such as depression and anxiety. Some studies have shown reflexology massage may be helpful even after birth, in that it stimulates the production of milk.

Prenatal massage conclusions

There is no evidence concluding that reflexology is unsafe during pregnancy. Of course the consideration is that your treatment is carried out correctly by a qualified health professional or reflexologist that is experienced in treating pregnant women. If nothing else, the massage aspect is extremely calming and relaxing, which is useful at any point during pregnancy.
