After Your Hip Replacement Surgery is Over – You are moved to a recovery room, monitored for several hours, then returned to your hospital room.

Hospital Release – In most cases, the typical hospital stay is one night. The length of your stay will depend on your age, health, and post-op evaluation. Some patients are released on the same day as the surgery.

Physical Therapy – You will be instructed to perform regular exercises designed to return strength and mobility to your hip. Before you are discharged from the hospital, you will be up and walking with a walker or crutches and performing simple exercises.

For the first two to three weeks, you will meet twice per week with a physical therapist. Over the following three to six weeks, you will gradually increase your walking distances and return to your normal physical activities.

Incision Healing – Bandages can be removed five days after surgery. For most people, it takes 10 to 15 days until any staples or sutures can be removed. Before your discharge from the hospital, you receive instructions on caring for the wound, and what to do if any signs of infection appear.

Swelling Reduction – Due to sluggish blood circulation after surgery, your calf and ankle will likely swell and slowly return to normal over 12 weeks. To help reduce this swelling:

• Rest with your legs elevated (knees above the level of your heart) multiple times per day for 10 to 20 minutes at a time.
• Apply cold packs to swollen or tender areas for 10 to 20 minutes 4 or 5 times per day.
• The walking routine you were given will also help reduce the swelling.

Blood Clot Prevention – To reduce the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), adhere to the following throughout your recovery:

• Walk even short distances every 2 to 3 hours; this promotes blood circulation.
• Perform the foot, ankle, and knee exercises prescribed to you by your physical therapist.
• Take your blood-thinning medication.

The idea is to continually engage in physical activity, promote blood circulation, and prevent deadly blood clots.

10 Wellness Tips to a Healthier You

Much like babies, New Year’s resolutions are fun to make but hard to maintain. Here are a few tips that can help you stay on track.

1. Try wearing a pedometer. They say, “Out of sight, out of mind.” New research suggests that wearing a pedometer encourages people to walk about an extra mile each day, and in effect lose weight, and lower their blood pressure. Having a constant reminder helps, and you can get a decent one for about $20. Make your goal 30 minutes of walking a day or 10,000 steps per day.

2. Lift weights! Too many people neglect resistance exercise, especially women. Strength training is crucial for preventing muscle and bone loss with age. Lift weights for at least 20 minutes, two- to three-times per week. Don't forget strength training, involving both the upper and lower body.

3. Eat more fish. Try eating least two fish meals per week. The evidence is strong that the oils in darker types of fish, such as tuna, salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, are very beneficial for the brain and hart, and may even lower risk of cancer.

4. Drink water. You’ve heard it a hundred times before, because its true- drink more water! Water truly is essential and should always be the first thing you reach for when you're thirsty.

5. Sleep 8 hours a night. Studies have confirmed that you really do need at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Some of the many benefits: You feel better, decreases risk for cardiovascular disease, and boosts memory.

6. Consider reflexology, acupressure and massage as valid therapies for chronic problems. Seeing a good massage therapist for neck strain may work better than taking extra strength Tylenol and/or Advil regularly. At the very least, these holistic options will help decrease stress and maintain overall wellness.

7. Keep sugar and caffeine to a minimum. Decreasing sugar actually increases your energy, by minimizing the highs and lows and preventing a sugar crash. People react differently to caffeine, but most of us are already overstimulated and could do without the additional boost. Drink green instead of coffee, the added bonus is weight loss.

8. Don't pop too many vitamins, evidence for their benefits are low. Try getting your daily vitamins from foods and consider taking a multivitamin right before bed.

9. Don't focus on dieting. Focus on eating, and WHAT you’re eating. If you're hungry, just eat something- otherwise you're more likely to overeat, especially in the evening. Instead, of sacrificing all day and gorging later, it's better to eat enough during the day to avoid hunger pangs and uncontrolled eating at night. Eat every four hours or so, to keep your energy up and make you less hungry in the evening. And mix it up by eating different foods at every meal.

10. Don't drink all your calories. It's easy to drink calories without noticing: that eggnog latte at Starbucks has nearly as many calories as a Big Mac. It's okay to have one as an occasional treat, but consider it a meal, not a drink.

Liver 3 (LV3): Tai Chong - You need to take off your shoe to find this point. This is an excellent area to stimulate for stress, low back pain, high blood pressure, limb pain, insomnia and emotional upset.

Pericardium 6 (P6): Nei Guan - This point can help provide relief for nausea, anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome, upset stomach, motion sickness and headaches and is even used for regulation of heart palpitations.

Triple Energizer 3: Zhong Zhu - This point is located in the groove formed by the tendons of the 4th and 5th finger, behind the knuckles and is commonly used in the clinic for temporal headaches, shoulder and neck tension, and upper back pain.

Spleen 6 (SP6): San Yin Jiao - This point can be very helpful for many urological and pelvic disorders as well as fatigue and insomnia. Avoid during pregnancy.

Stomach36 (ST36): Zu San Li - You can find this point useful for fatigue and depression as well as knee pain and gastrointestinal discomfort. Asians frequently stimulate this point for health promotion and longevity.

The southern heat is officially underway as summer has arrived. This means we all look forward to barbecues and pool days ahead in the sizzling sun. The summer heat can be a real problem for most of us, in our feet and ankles. This extreme heat causes our bodies to be less efficient at removing fluid from the tissues. High temperatures can cause fluid retention, causing us to swell. Our bodies’ mechanism to cool down is swelling. Although, swelling is usually temporary, swollen feet can be very uncomfortable.

Extreme Heat Causes Swollen Feet


Swollen feet and ankles are no fun to say the least. Achy feet from pressure caused by heat, we would all rather avoid, but most of us suffer from at some point.
